The year that was

We started the year by revealing how 2018’s Christmas was a cracker for our parcel sort machines (PSMs), with more than 20 million parcels successfully processed in December.
Dynamic duo, James Macdonald and Rob Woodward from Heston Delivery Office, made national headlines when they thwarted a robber who thought he could get away with one of our vans.
Love was in the air in February as we celebrated the numerous couples from across the business who met while working together at Royal Mail.
March was all about our first ever zero-emission e-trike trials and it was appy days in April when we added Alexa to the Royal Mail app. Meanwhile, Home Counties North driver, Gary Townsend was busy donating his 75th pint of blood!
In May, we announced our five-year ‘turnaround and grow’ plan on the same day we revealed our 2018-19 results. And in June, we revealed our best ever employee survey engagement score.
Action-packed July was truly a month to remember with both the men’s and women’s England cricket teams becoming world champions. We also had the first glimpse of our North West hub in Warrington and took part in no less than 17 Pride parades – the most we’ve ever done.
Logistics & International (pictured) claimed the Ops Fundraising Challenge in August, having raised the most money per head. Overall, colleagues raised an incredible £330,000 for our charity partner, Action for Children, including matched giving.
We went green in September with our new eco-friendly Courier wrap, but nature was against an elderly customer in Yorkshire, who fell into a rapidly rising river. Fortunately for her, postman Danny Weston was on hand to save the day.
In October, we marked the 60th anniversary of the postcode – one of our greatest innovations, and colleagues spent a night on the streets for Action for Children’s annual Byte Night event.
Parcels powered up November with the installation of our 16th PSM. At the same time, we reached more than half a billion parcels sorted on all PSMs since the first machine was installed in Swindon three years ago.
And finally, as always, your hard work and dedication helped the snap General Election run smoothly and deliver a Christmas to remember for all our customers. Thank you, and a very Happy Christmas to all.
