We’re going green

Do you like your new Courier? Did you notice anything different? We hope you like the new look!

Did you notice anything different about your new-look Courier when our October issue arrived on your doorstep?

Following a number of letters similar to the one below calling on us to revise the use of the previous non-recyclable plastic packaging we used to send Courier in, we’re delighted to report that from now on, Courier will be delivered in an environmentally-friendly paper wrap.

‘Would it be possible to stop sending Courier in a plastic bag? I’ve been told it is biodegradable but the problem with this material is it’s not recyclable and mostly ends up at landfill sites, and will never decompose in a complete absence of light and oxygen.

‘The second efficiency benefit would be that the paper envelopes could then be put through automation machines, as apparently you cannot do this with plastic.’ Ian Ditchfield, Chester Delivery Office.

We’re always keen to hear from our readers with any ideas or comments on Courier. We carried out detailed investigations into various different packaging methods to make sure we found an effective solution from an operational point of view. We completely agree with Ian as well as other colleagues who have voiced similar concerns, in that it was high time we got rid of our plastic packaging. We hope you like our new green look!

Lily Heinemann, head of corporate responsibility, corporate reporting, community investment and events, said: ‘I’m really pleased that we have switched to using a new recyclable paper envelope for Courier. This is another positive to step to reduce our use of single-use plastics.’
