‘What a legend’

Pat McKenna deservedly recognised with Ops Challenge award for his ‘tireless fundraising’ efforts

Area leadership team support manager, Pat McKenna, from Croydon Mail Centre, was voted the winner of the ‘outstanding individual contribution award’ for this year’s Ops Fundraising Challenge.

After a shortlisted number of nominated entries were put to the polls, Patrick’s nomination gained the most votes.

The original nomination for Pat was made by charity and community champion, Tim Hyde at Medway Mail Centre, who said: ‘Patrick Mckenna for his tireless non-stop fundraising, which saw him organise so many events it was dizzying.

‘He then ran the London Marathon for the fourth time - an amazing feat on its own, held a holiday raffle to win a week in Spain, a vinyl night and countless other events, which saw him raise a staggering £11,000 for the Ops Challenge- what a legend!’

Pat has raised tens of thousands of pounds in recent years, fundraising for various charities, including Great Ormond Street Hospital and our very own Rowland Hill Fund.

He said: ‘This year, between January and June, I set myself a personal target of raising £10,000 for Action for Children, with Royal Mail matched giving, by doing the following:

  • January – charity night
  • February – bucket collection at Euston
  • March – bucket Collection at Victoria
  • April –The London Marathon
  • June – Vinyl night in Margate and a cake sale in Croydon
  • July – charity night to handover all the money he raised to Action for Children.

‘The total I raised was £11,125. This was matched by Royal Mail, so the cheque for Action for Children ended up being for £22,250.

‘I was overwhelmed at having won the Ops Challenge award. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and kept going to achieve the target I’d set myself.

‘I’d like to thank Donna Barrett, John Heffer and all the people who helped me make my mission possible. The team at Action for Children do a superb job and have supported me all the way. They’re special people who are clearly passionate about the work they do.

‘Finally, I’d like to give a special thank you to Tim Hyde, charity lead in Kent who has stood by me throughout.’
