The Worlds are calling

Preston postie is ready for the trip of a lifetime

Timing hasn’t always been kind to @Elizabeth Davidson but this time she’s determined it’ll be different – and you can help one of our own deliver a dream.

‘Lizz’ has qualified for the 2024 Worlds Sprint Distance Duathlon Championships in Townsville, Australia, and is desperate to pull on her Great Britain jersey again – this time on the biggest stage.

The Preston postie is ready for the trip of a lifetime but is asking for support to help fund her dream. Unfortunately, the sport’s governing body doesn’t contribute financial assistance, so the mum-of-three must self-fund.

Lizz has set up a fundraising page, which you can access and donate to by clicking here, to contribute towards flights, accommodation, race fees and kit.

‘With your contribution and support, it would make this opportunity of a lifetime possible,’ said Lizz, whose husband @Nicolas Davidson is also a Royal Mail employee. ‘Any help at all would be massively appreciated – even if your office can do ‘football cards’ or similar, as we have done in Preston.

‘I think it is nice to share the achievements of Royal Mail people and I always enjoy seeing what other colleagues are doing in their lives away from work.’

Duathlon is a similar format to triathlon but loses the swimming element and consists of run, cycle, run. Lizz first competed in triathlon in 2008 and, after lots of club-level events, decided to up the ante and compete to represent Team GB in her age group. In 2018, she reached the European Championships in Glasgow. It was the lack of access to a swimming pool due to the coronavirus pandemic-enforced restrictions that saw her change to duathlon.

Since Glasgow, the worlds has been her goal, but the combination of expanding her family, the pandemic and the impact of the war in Ukraine – has placed that ambition on hold. Now she has another chance.

‘The first time I pulled on a Great Britain jersey, that feeling is indescribable,’ says Lizz, who regularly supports charities at Royal Mail. ‘Qualifying is the hardest part. When you get there it’s all about enjoying the experience.

‘That said, I’m always after the competition I can’t reach – that’s what drives me. And, well, being a postie, it keeps you fit!’

We know there are lots of amazing stories out there. Please share on Workplace or email your news to rmcommunications@royalmail.com.
