Positive vibe

Congratulations to the team at Rhyl Delivery Office in Denbighshire, winners of the CEO and COO Award for ‘Large Delivery Office of the Quarter’ for Q2.
The new quarterly awards scheme, which is sponsored by Group CEO Rico Back and chief operating and finance officer Stuart Simpson, is based on the units that score most highly across four key areas of performance measurement: safety, First Class quality, cost and productivity.
At the end of the year, we'll be presenting awards to the overall 'units of the year,' recognising the best performing units nationally. Winners will receive money to spend at their unit.
Acting delivery office manager Josh Mewes, said: ‘Elated, is the word, really. To see how we’ve transformed the office from what was a rather difficult environment at times, to an open two-way channel in which there is trust, respect and a healthy relationship between the frontline and ourselves – it’s something we’re all really proud of.’
In last year’s Employee Survey, colleagues said they wanted to see more recognition. They felt managers were overlooking people who went the extra mile or delivered great performance consistently.
‘We realised that we were spending a lot of time pushing the scorecard areas we needed to improve on and not celebrating success,’ said Josh. ‘There was a lot of unintended negativity being cascaded to our teams.’
Led by delivery office manager, Graham Simpson, the management team started making changes to create a more positive vibe.
‘We now celebrate everyone’s birthday with a card and we recognise achievements, big and small, that contribute towards our success as a unit,’ said Josh. ‘That includes maintaining clean and tidy vans, clearing frames or 100% collection performance. We also hand out boxes of chocolates for things like consistency of high level work or showing you care about safety.
‘We’ve been doing a lot more charity activities together too, such as our Step Challenge and the Go Pink Day we did for breast cancer awareness. We even have our own football team! Our scorecard has actually improved and that’s because we’re putting our energy and focus into what we do brilliantly.’
Postman, Anthony Stanley, said: ‘Having served 32 years at Royal Mail, I’ve seen plenty of changes, both good and bad. The management team we have now are very proactive in the office, helping with charity work, giving out birthday cards to make people feel valued and solving issues quickly and efficiently.
‘This has all helped create an improved atmosphere that’s a pleasure to work in. Long may this continue!’
