Net-Zero targets validated

We are proud to announce that Royal Mail has received Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) validation of our greenhouse gas emission reduction and Net-Zero targets, positioning us as leaders in the low-carbon transition.
We launched our Steps to Zero strategy setting out our ambition to reach Net-Zero by 2040 in June last year. We signed up to have our plans scrutinised by the external global body, SBTi, around a year ago. During this time the plans have been subject to a robust and comprehensive review.
Our ‘feet on the street’ network of posties walk up to a billion steps everyday, meaning we are already the greenest option for delivering parcels, based on competitors’ reported emissions*. We will continue to drive our emissions per parcel down with support and guidance from the SBTi.
Why is this so important?
Companies have a crucial role to play in reducing global emissions. The latest climate science from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) - described by the UN as “code red for humanity” – shows it is still possible to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C, but we are dangerously close to that threshold.
Reducing our emissions is also incredibly important to our customers and gives us a competitive advantage when we bid for contracts. As companies battle to lead and win in this area, having SBTi validated targets demonstrates that we have a clear plan and robust evidence to back-up our environmental activity.
Thank you to everyone involved in making this happen, to stay up to date with our progress search #stepstozero on Workplace or read our latest Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) report here.
