As we continue our International Women’s Day celebrations, we’re closing the week with a spotlight on Honiton Delivery Office Postwoman, Lucy Garland – a woman who proves that with willpower, you can break boundaries and achieve greatness.
By day, Lucy is posting parcels but in the early hours, she’s pushing weights in the world of bodybuilding.
Recent Ms Universe, Lucy’s journey into bodybuilding began as a former triathlete, she’s always been active, competing in tetrathlons and triathlons from a young age. After a road accident left her with a serious knee injury, Lucy turned to strength training for rehabilitation. It was during her time at an old-school bodybuilding gym, that her new talent was unlocked.
‘The guys at the gym said I had potential. I researched bodybuilding, and thought, why not give it a try?’ said Lucy.
What followed was a rapid rise through the bodybuilding ranks.
While building a title-winning body, Lucy balances the demands of being a mother, a Postwoman and a champion bodybuilder. As a single mum, the flexibility of her role has enabled her to fit in early morning training, intense workouts after work, and time with her three children. Every day, she’s up before dawn for cardio, then is out on the road delivering to our customers, before heading straight to the gym.
Lucy’s dedication paid off when she won Ms. Universe in 2023 – a victory that brought her to tears, especially with her children watching.
‘Having them there made it all the more emotional. It’s proof that with hard work, you can achieve anything’ said Lucy.
As a natural athlete, Lucy faces unique challenges, but her drive to better herself each year pushes her forward. She doesn’t just compete for titles; she competes to show her children, and all women, that strength is not just physical – it’s mental and emotional too.
Her advice to others balancing passions and careers is this – ‘It’s all about willpower and time management. If you’re determined, you can make it happen.’
On this International Women’s Day, Lucy Garland’s journey is a powerful reminder of what women can achieve when they push the limits, break down barriers, and refuse to be defined by anything but their own potential.
