Engineering her path

International Women's Day

With Hersday, our International Women’s Day celebrating taking place tomorrow, we’re shining one more light on women at Royal Mail who are moving the dial in equity and inclusivity.

Today, we’re spotlighting Aysha Allen, Automation Maintenance Technician at North West Super Hub.  Aysha started an apprenticeship as a lab technician when she discovered a love for science and engineering, which led her to pursue a second apprenticeship at Amazon. That experience set the foundation for a successful career at Royal Mail, where she’s been able to develop and thrive in various engineering roles.

‘I always had a passion for science-based subjects as a student, and when I was offered the chance to attend an engineering college course, I took it. It was the best decision I could have made—it opened up so many opportunities, and I just loved it’ said Aysha.

What she loves most about being an engineer is the hands-on nature of the work and the variety each day brings.

‘No two days are the same, which keeps me engaged and excited. There’s always something new to learn and different challenges to tackle, and that’s what helps me continue to grow in my career.’

Over the years, Aysha has also witnessed a positive change in gender diversity within engineering. When she first started at Royal Mail, the Engineering Team was predominantly male, but now she’s seeing more and more women joining the field. ‘It’s refreshing to see more younger women getting involved in engineering’ said Aysha.

When asked the advice she’d give to others who are interested in engineering, Aysha said: ‘don’t let the idea of engineering being a male-dominated field hold you back. If it’s something you’re passionate about, go for it. There’s plenty of room for women in engineering, and we need more of us to lead the way.’

You can hear more from female game-changers at Royal Mail at the Hersday event on Thursday 6 March – attendees also have the opportunity to converse and ask questions during the afternoon panel session. You can read the full agenda here.
