Feel-good Friday

For 25 years, Laurencekirk Delivery Office Postie, Shona Brown has been a familiar face in her rural Scottish community, delivering more than just letters—she’s delivered consistent kindness and a helping hand and now has received recognition by the Scottish Parliament.
Shona’s journey with Royal Mail began as part-time postie in 1995 alongside her 12-year career as an Auxiliary Nurse. Starting on the late shift, she quickly learned the ropes, navigating the roads in her trusty old Sherpa van, clocking up to 107 miles per day! Over the years, Shona has built strong bonds with customers, becoming more than just a postie—she’s a friend, a listener, and sometimes even a lifesaver.
One of Shona’s many good deeds was on a day she found a new mum collapsed at her door in severe pain. Acting swiftly, she calmed the baby and toddler, called for help, and stayed with her until family arrived. Shona received flowers of gratitude shortly after, and now has the pleasure of seeing that baby as a 14-year old working on his dad’s farm.
Shona’s dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed – whether it’s helping elderly customers with their post to sharing laughs and sometime tears with the community, she’s become a local legend. Her commitment to the service was recently recognised with a motion in Scottish Parliament, celebrating her 25 years of service.
‘It is a great honour to be recognised this way. I do it for my customers, I consider them family as sometimes I see them more than my own’ said Shona - a sentiment echoed by those lucky enough to be on her postal round.
Outside of work, Shona is just as dedicated, raising thousands for Macmillan Cancer Research, tackling daring challenges like a tandem parachute jump and the West Highland Way. She’s also a platelet donor, giving her impressive 173 donation recently!
When Ross Hutchison, Regional Operations Director for Scotland heard of Shona’s recognition, he said: ‘The average length of service in Scotland being 18 years, it shows Shona is a fantastic example of what it means to be a part of the community. Shona is people-focused inside in and out of work and truly represents the values of Royal Mail.’
