New British made EVs

Rolling out of Ellesmere Port

We are delighted that over 50 per cent of our recently purchased 2,100 Electric Vehicles (EVs) are British made by Peugeot, alongside sister brand Stellantis, at Ellesmere Port, the UK’s first EV-only plant.

The vans, which will hit the streets this week, are also the first of our electric vehicles to bear the cypher of King Charles III.

Greg Sage, Royal Mail’s Deputy Director for Corporate Affairs and ESG, said: ‘We’re proud that our latest tranche of electric vehicles has been produced in the UK. This is an important part of our work to expand the UK’s largest electric delivery fleet and to remain the UK’s greenest delivery company.’*

Once all 2,100 vehicles are deployed our EV fleet will total over 7,000, an exciting milestone in our Steps to Zero ambition to be Net-Zero by 2040.

And with all our electricity sourced from renewables, charging our electric vans on-site means they are effectively zero-emissions.

The average carbon saving, compared to a Royal Mail diesel van, is 2.87 tonnes CO2e per annum, so we expect to save around 6,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year when the vehicles are fully deployed.

Last year we also introduced hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) to fuel many of our HGVs, a renewable alternative to diesel, with 90 per cent less direct carbon emissions compared to diesel, which has already saved more than 30,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent.
