24 hours for the Fund

Cycling challenge for in-house charity underway

The Rowland Hill Fund (RHF) continues to do incredible work supporting postal people in need and their cause is being championed once more by a group of Royal Mail fundraisers.

Led by Head of Property (Group Legal), Liam Staniland, the cyclists will ride 400km in 24 hours starting at North West Super Hub in Warrington today, before heading to Farringdon Road in London, via the Midlands Super Hub in Daventry.

Already, almost £13,000 has been raised from this event for the Fund – but every penny more is helpful to give RHF the chance to support more of our own.

The Rowland Hill Fund offers vital financial grants to postal people at their greatest time of need, when they’re facing homelessness, life-changing health challenges or unexpected financial difficulties. In 2023/24 alone, it awarded 200 grants and distributed £225,000. To see just how important it can be for our people, click here to watch Walsall postie Tanya Whitehouse’s story with her son Lewis.

Lewis has cerebral palsy and has had hip surgery. After advice from the physio to help him exercise, the Fund purchased a special walker for Lewis.

Tanya says: ‘My manager told me about the Rowland Hill Fund and when we needed the new walker I thought I’d ask. It’s making him stronger and can access all outside and can use it in PE at school to be the same as his peers.’

Joining Liam is Matt Newman (Group General Counsel and Company Secretary), Dan Quy (Assistant General Counsel Competition & Regulation and Director of Compliance & Ethics), Luke Ainger (Head of Competition), and Nicola Elam (Senior Legal Counsel Competition).

Liam said: ‘The Rowland Hill Fund does incredible work helping postal people and their families at their greatest time of need.  It’s therefore fantastic that we’re able to use something, which we all enjoy doing, to raise funds to support its vital work.’

It’s not the first time Liam and his colleagues have been moved into action by the Fund, after a three-day cycle across Europe last year.

And Shan Lawrence, Communications Manager at RHF, has been quick to acknowledge the importance of their efforts.

She said: ‘We are so grateful to these fit, enthusiastic cyclists who are taking on a 24-hour challenge to raise money for the Fund.

‘Our aim is to help postal people in financial need, and these fundraising heroes and heroines are selflessly donning the lycra to support. A special shout out to Liam Staniland and Elizabeth Parrish and the wider Royal Mail legal team for their continued support.’
