USPS going green

Industry insight

Today, 19 September, is Green Postal Day; a day for 24 postal operators worldwide to celebrate environmental targets and actions.

As Royal Mail aims to reach Net Zero by 2040, we see how industry colleagues at United States Postal Service (USPS) are taking a similar path.

In 2024, USPS announced it will:

  • Reduce emissions from fuels and electricity by 40% by 2030
  • Reduce emissions from the supply chain by 20% by 2030 (Scope 3)
  • Increase environmental awareness across the organisation’s 640,000 employees
  • Grow the circular economy and reduce waste
  • Aggregate volumes to save thousands of trips each day
  • Use less air transportation.

Electric fleet

USPS will deploy 66,000 electric vehicles (EVs) by 2028 - one of the largest commitments to vehicle electrification in the world - and is now exploring the feasibility of achieving 100% electrification across its delivery fleet.

The EVs selected by USPS are a mix of off-the-shelf vehicles and ones made specifically for their operations.

To power its EVs and estate with cleaner energy, USPS also aims to achieve a 10% renewable electricity target by 2030 by producing more renewable electricity on-site as well as procuring it.

Circular economy

To improve the circularity of its business, USPS aims to:

  • Divert 75% of waste from landfills
  • Increase recycled content in its packaging to 74%
  • Increase recyclability of its packaging to 88%.
