Feel-good Friday

Every summer we welcome students from a variety of backgrounds to temporarily join us to get a feel for the working world.
Huddersfield local, Muhammad Yahya Sadiq is a 15-year-old currently studying for his GCSEs with hopes of developing his skills through an apprenticeship programme after his studies. Yahya’s uncle, Agha Sadiq, Operational Standards and Compliance Managers, introduced the idea of work experience at Royal Mail to him.
Yahya knew a lot about Royal Mail and the breadth of our company and was confident that an opportunity here could broaden his range of career paths.
The team at Huddersfield made sure Yahya was prepared and ready for his experience, with health and safety precautions and guided tours of locations he’d be working in.
‘During my time at Royal Mail, I worked in a delivery office, vehicle workshop, and local mail centre – all of which gave me the opportunity to meet new people and shadow them in a real work setting’ said Yahya.
‘I was able to understand a range of roles both in and outdoor as well as finding out what makes the colleagues enjoy their role.’
Not only did we to provide knowledge and skills to Yahya we were also able to get constructive feedback on his findings, with notable mentions for our impressive PDA and item tracking systems as well as his observations on the inspiring teamwork.
‘Everyone works together as a team to get the job done – and everybody works to a standard. Each team was caring and looked after me and shared their own experiences said Yahya.
Yahya successfully completed his five days of work experience and was awarded a certificate which he said he’ll be proudly displaying.
Huddersfield Delivery Office COM, David Holmes had all good things to say about having Yahya join his team for the week:
‘It was great to have Yahya join us for the week - he was very open minded and quick to give tasks a go.
Yahya recognised quality of service as being an important part of what we do, which included safeguarding of the mail. I would very much welcome Yahya to consider Royal Mail in the future as we would be delighted to have him join the team. It’s good to know Yahya took away some valuable insights and learning in an actual working environment.’
