Feel-good Friday

When Edgware Postie, Ashok Shah started at Royal Mail at the age of 23 after moving from Kenya, he only intended to stay for one year, before using his qualifications to become a maths teacher.
But, after finding his place at Edgware Delivery Office, enjoying the friendships he made along the way and finding work to be complimentary to his life, Ashok has stayed with Royal Mail delivering across multiple delivery routes – for 50 years!.
In 2002, Ashok got into a serious accident where he brkeboth legs and succumbed to a coma. Sheer fight and determination got Ashok on the mend but not only that, he was adamant to get back to his role at Royal Mail. The necessary adjustments were made and Ashok transferred to Harrow Mail Centre where he worked on coding machines for two years before returning to Edgeware Delivery Office.
When asked about his half a decade at Royal Mail and advice he’s offer new joiners, Ashok said: ‘Stick with it, have the determination to do your job, make friends and enjoy your time and life.’
Ashok is a highly commended member of the Edgware team:
‘When I first joined the Edgware team, I was shocked to learn that the most senior person in the team was reaching 50 years’ service. My parents hadn't even immigrated to the country when Ashok began his career at Royal Mail’ said Savinder Kahlon, Customer Operations Manager.
‘Just imagining the transformation that Ashok has witnessed over the last 50 years is absolutely mind staggering. It makes me think what does it take to serve for 50 years? Commitment, loyalty, and passion.’
‘After meeting Ashok, I knew why he had served so long. He is committed to the business, loyal to his team and the values of the business and passionate about the customers we serve. Ashok truly is the embodiment of all that makes Royal Mail great. It’s not just what we deliver - it’s the team that deliver it. Amazing people like Ashok - thank you for your service.’
Customer Operations Manager, Kalpesh Cangi, hailed Ashok as the number one postman and an absolute pleasure to know and work with. Also, he’s the only person I have come across in Royal Mail who has achieved 50 years service.
‘In the short time I have known Ashok, it has been a pleasure’ says Cover Manage, Karm Robinson. ‘His commitment and achieving his 50 years service is a testament to his dedication to Royal Mail. Always a joy to be around with his unique sense of humour and catchphrases making the whole office laugh. I salute you and your great achievement Ashok.’
