Danny the champion

Of the community… inspiring future posties

Royal Mail has many ambassadors - people who love the job, adore their community and those who want to connect the two.

We recently became aware of Danny Burns from North Belfast Delivery Office who has gone above and beyond to help inspire the potential future generation of posties! Danny has been covering the same duty and delivering mail to Holy Cross Primary School for the last 34 years. Every year the school runs a careers week where they invite people to talk to the children about their jobs. Danny was first approached to go into the school to talk to the children about being a postie about 27 years ago, and he’s been returning to the school careers week, every year since.

Danny said: ‘I take one of the Royal Mail vans along and my delivery trolley, and I talk to them about the job and what happens when they post a letter. The kids love it and I love it. Some children remember me years later as “Postman Danny”, from when I visited them at school.

‘I think it’s important for children to see what different jobs entail, and some of them might decide to become one of our future employees.’

At Christmas, Danny goes into the school to collect the children’s Christmas cards, encouraging them to send their own to family and friends and again reinforcing our community role.

Pearse Morris, Lead Customer Operations Manager at North Belfast said: ‘Danny is an all-round brilliant member of the team, he gives so much back to his community. He’s also a blues and twos driver for St John’s Ambulance, and during Covid took special leave to provide additional support to help relieve some of the pressure on the service. We’re so proud of him and the way represents the company in our community.’

We know there are lots of amazing stories out there. Please share on Workplace or email your news to rmcommunications@royalmail.com
