Inspiring skillset

Tomorrow, Friday 8 March we’ll be recognising International Women’s Day and celebrating the theme of #InspiringInclusion. This week we’ve been showcasing how women at Royal Mail are an example of how we embed inclusion at Royal Mail and Parcelforce.
Safety Technician, Alexandra Devlin joined the safety team in May 2023 bringing her wealth of knowledge and skills during her nine years in the British Army as a Vehicle Mechanic.
‘I had the opportunity to be stationed all over the UK and was even lucky enough to be stationed abroad in Cyprus for two years. During my time in the Army, I gained my Qualifications in Mechanical engineering as well as other supplementary courses that I utilised in my everyday job’ said Alexandra.
While Alexandra was a Vehicle Mechanic by trade, she was able to explore other avenues and was picked to join the Corps Engagement Team for the Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers (REME). This was an opportunity for Alexandra and her team to travel the nation presenting to student in engineering schools and colleges.
‘We even had the privilege of hosting a Women in Engineering event with all female engineering college students who were looking to build a career for themselves in the field of engineering.’
After starting her family, Alexandra was keen to make a transition to a more stable role which could accommodate her personal life but still align with her passion for health and safety. Whilst on maternity leave, Alexandra completed her NEBOSH General Certificate and it wasn’t long before she joined Royal Mail and began her career journey with us.
In the Health and Safety team, there are regular team meetings which offer professional and personal support.
‘Royal mail and especially my team are extremely gender inclusive. Women are supported just as much as the men on the team. We are given the same opportunities to progress and further our careers.’
‘The support and inclusivity have always been there. I’ve always felt confident that I am offered the same opportunity as the men in my team. My voice is heard and valued.’
