An inspiring journey

On Friday 8 March, we’ll be recognising International Women’s Day and in the run-up we’re celebrating the incredible women we work alongside.
Today we’re shining a light on the career possibilities at Royal Mail and Jennifer Byrne’s journey is a glowing example.
Jennifer joined Royal Mail in November 2019, starting as an OPG working as a feeder on the end of a tracked line. Following Jennifer’s initial role, she was able to create her career ladder progressing to Bay Marshal, Deputy, Team Leader and now a Shift Manager.
‘I found it quite nerve wracking to go from OPG to a managerial role, luckily, I had a brilliant team of managers around me. It was a prominently male workforce who were all supportive and helped me with their knowledge and skills,’ said Jennifer when discussing her time at Warrington Rail Terminal.
During her time at Warrington, Jennifer’s strong work ethic continued to be recognised and she nominated to a deputy managers’ online course, which provided her with the invaluable skills required for her role.
Jennifer credits her journey to the support of her colleagues and expressed the importance of stepping out of your comfort zone.
‘The advice I would give is to just give it a go,’ she said. ‘Don’t hold back. Find a team of people or a mentor to surround yourself with where you can support each other. Learn from everyone you can and don’t say no to an opportunity. What have you got to lose?’
