Winning the treble… three green awards for our fleet team

Our Fleet team attended the 2023 Greenfleet Awards, showcasing pioneering fleet operators that have risen to the environmental decarbonisation challenge.

Stuart Murphy, Head of Fleet Transformation, received individual recognition, and was awarded Private Sector Fleet Manager of the Year.

Stuart was nominated by Rob Fowler, Fleet Director, and his own team; Debbie Wilson, Matt Chappell, Harry Maqbool, Brian Vas and Anna Pearson.

Stuart said “No other business has delivered as many EVs as Royal Mail. We’re very much seen as the industry leader in this field, and I’m delighted that we’ve been recognised as such. We have lots of other projects in flight to continue our journey to decarbonise our fleet and I look forward to sharing those over the coming months”.

Rob said ‘Stuart has an overwhelming passion for developing strategies and solutions for Royal Mail which allows it to push forward in its #stepstozero journey. His knowledge of the subject area is highly respected in the industry and from all his colleagues’.

We were also commended in the GreenFleet, Private Sector Commercial Fleet of the Year category.

On the same night Matt Chappell and Harry Maqbool, on behalf of Royal Mail, attended a separate award ceremony where we scooped the Van Business of the Year, for electrification of the Royal Mail fleet, at the Business group Logistics UK Awards.

These two awards come hot on the heels of the Logistic UK Fleet awards on 15 September, again with Logistics UK, where we were awarded Innovative Van Business of the Year.

This is fantastic recognition for the work the team have been doing to spearhead the fleet transformation on behalf of the business. Congratulations to everyone involved.

What sets the Royal Mail green fleet apart from the competition?

We continue to secure our position as the greenest fleet provider in the UK.

  • We have the UK’s largest commercial electric vehicle (EV) fleet of over 5,000 vehicles
  • 13.2% of all miles driven in Royal Mail are driven by an EV
  • The majority of the EV fleet is charged on-site via electricity sourced from renewable resources
  • Thanks to our drivers, since 2017 vehicle idling has reduced from an average of 32% to 18%.
  • We are working with vehicle manufacturers to co-design, trial and test zero-emission truck technologies
  • We have deployed Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) to six key sites, using HVO reduces direct emissions by up to 90% compared to diesel.
