Postie delivers own baby

Feel-good Friday

Monday 7 August started earlier than usual for Scott Rogers when his wife, Jo, woke him up at 3am and then 5am to say, ‘the baby will be coming today’.

After sitting with Jo while her contractions were gradually getting closer together, Scott needed to drop their son off to family before making his way back home.

‘I unfortunately got stuck in traffic in Pontypool! Jo kept ringing me but there was no signal in the Valleys,’ said Scott.

By the time he arrived home at 8.40am, there wasn’t even time to take off his jacket or boots – Jo was needing to push.

‘I said, “Whoa, hang on – I can get you to hospital in 15 minutes.” I had the midwives on speaker phone. They told me someone was on their way, but I’d be delivering our baby at home.

‘Her little head came out and the midwives wanted to know if the baby was making a noise. She wasn’t – so my heart started fluttering. It was then that I thought something was going wrong for us,’ he said.

After following the midwives’ instructions to help turn the baby into a better position, baby Taymar was born at 9am.

‘I popped her straight onto Jo’s chest. That’s when the adrenalin kicked in. I had a baby daughter. I actually had to step outside for five minutes to get some air. I was in shock. I went to my neighbours and knocked on their doors to tell them what happened.

‘The midwife then arrived and asked me why I was outside. I was told I’d done a brilliant job. I cut the cord and the rest is history,’ said Scott.

After working as a postie for 23 years, Scott’s ‘special delivery’ hasn’t swayed him to consider a career change in midwifery.

‘I’m happy being a postman – I love my job. But the experience will be with me forever. We have a special bond because I delivered her,’ said Scott. ‘And I told Jo we can’t sell the house now – I delivered my own daughter in our living room!’.

As a standard procedure with all babies born at home, Taymar and Jo were taken to hospital the next day for a check-up – with Scott receiving a standing ovation in the reception area from other parents-to-be and staff.

Both mum and bub are back home and thriving. Well done, Scott!
