Manual to digital

PDA vehicle checks: Staying safe inside, outside and under the bonnet

A very important part of this job is safely returning home to your families at the end of every working day.

Like other companies, we’re developing in technology to not only improve on productivity but prevent workplace injuries.

PDA vehicle checks is just one of the ways we’re evolving to streamline workplace standards.

Windermere delivery office is just one of many sites who took part in the initial trial. Delivery office manager, Michelle Rickman, recognises that she and the team have benefited from the transition.

‘As a manager, moving from manual to digital checks has been really beneficial. I’m able to see that the checks are completed, I can monitor each team member daily to check they’re doing it and it highlights any issues found.

‘Even though my team have always been accountable for checking their vehicles, doing it on the PDA means they’re more focused on the task at hand. The check requires them to fill out all the details. If not, and a fault is found at a later date when the check was submitted, they’ll need to provide an explanation.’

Michelle believes the easy-to-navigate system is also a big reason why it has been well-received.

‘There are three sections: ‘Indoor’, ‘Outdoor’ and ‘Under the Bonnet’ and each has several straightforward questions that require the user to give a ‘thumbs up’ or a ‘thumbs down’, to suggest if it’s ok or not ok. I have definitely seen an increase in people asking for oil, water and screen wash.’

Postman Steve Lishman agrees: ‘It’s straightforward, easy to use and it only takes a few minutes to complete.’

As well as productivity improvements, Michelle’s also noticed business benefits too.

‘A more streamlined and efficient team improve the day-to-day running of the unit, and this can definitely have an impact on cost. Regularly checking the vehicles has highlighted that developing vehicle issues are getting spotted, which allows the vehicle to be fixed rather than missed and being deemed unroadworthy.’
