No ‘arm done

Steve's 3,000 push-up fundraiser for Teenage Cancer Trust raises more than £1,000

Spare a thought for the arms of Steve Skip, after the Hull postie raised more than £1,000 for the Teenage Cancer Trust by completing the charity’s ‘3,000 push-ups in November’ challenge.

The Teenage Cancer Trust, which celebrated its 30th anniversary last year, create world-class cancer services for young people in the UK, providing life-changing care and support so young people don't have to face cancer alone.

Every day, seven young people aged 13-24 hear the words ‘you have cancer.’ They will each need specialised nursing care and support to get them through the toughest times they may have faced.

‘I started the challenge hoping to raise £100,’ said Steve. ‘But when I finished, I had raised over £1,000.

‘I decided to do this challenge because cancer has massively affected my life. I lost my dad, my sister and two father-in-laws in less than three years to various cancers. Also, my brother-in-law, who is a postman at Malmo Road, has battled and beaten lymphoma recently too.

‘I was involved in a fundraiser for lymphoma action, where we raised around £700. As it was the 30th anniversary of the Teenage Cancer Trust, when a friend suggested I take part, I leapt at the chance to help such a great cause.

‘My friends, family and colleagues have all been very generous helping me with my fundraising. But it has been my customers on my round who have really surprised me by contributing more than £500. They saw me doing push-ups and word spread. The response has been overwhelming.’

Steve said it was slow and painful when he first started the challenge.

‘I was doing them anywhere and everywhere, whenever I had a spare moment,’ he said. ‘But towards the end, I was actually enjoying doing them. Doing this challenge has made me so proud, and my family keep telling me that they’re proud of what I have achieved.’

Sean Hendry, Hull delivery office manager, said: ‘What Steve has done during these difficult times is fantastic. To make time to do this during his hectic workload notwithstanding Covid-19 is a real credit to him.’
