Manoj is crowned the ‘Higher or Degree Apprentice of the Year’ for the West Midlands

Congratulations to head of reliability and knowledge, Manoj Vadher, for winning the ‘Royal Navy Award for Higher or Degree Apprentice of the Year’ for the West Midlands in the National Apprenticeship Awards.

Manoj started his engineering career as a maintenance engineer at Birmingham Mail Centre. He is now responsible for creating and delivering 1,200 letters and parcel automation reliability improvements strategic plans. He is also responsible for the professional continuous development of around 650 engineering professionals, including managers.

He is now in the final year of his ‘Managing in Technology-based Industry’ Masters Level 7 degree apprenticeship at the University of Warwick. Whilst completing his own apprenticeship as well as his day to day role, Manoj has supported many Engineering colleagues with furthering their own development through apprenticeships from Level 2 right through to Level 7.

‘It feels amazing to have won the regional award,’ said Manoj. ‘I was overwhelmed and quite emotional when I heard.

‘I grew up in India. My parents couldn’t afford to send me to a school in India, but they did, even though it was one without a roof. It is so rewarding to have my journey recognised at this level. I feel very proud, both for myself and my parents.’

Unlocking doors

In addition to his role, Manoj’s apprenticeship has allowed him to work in areas and develop knowledge and skills he would not normally have had the opportunity to do so.

‘Apprenticeships are a fantastic way to train yourself while you earn,’ said Manoj. ‘Balancing work and study can be challenging, especially if you’re in a demanding role. But the key benefit of studying through apprenticeships is that it allows you to integrate study with your day-to-day role.

‘For me, both areas grew in parallel. I gained significant knowledge on strategic management and, leading and developing people. And I was able to develop role-specific skills that I could immediately apply to my role.

‘I would now like to progress to the next level in my career, moving up to director level. I hope to be able to inspire others, and support communities and individuals in their aspirations. If anyone is thinking about doing an apprenticeship, I would say it’s the best choice you can make for yourself. Find the right course with the relevant apprenticeship standards for you and go for it.’
