Committed Kent crafters put knitting needles and crochet hooks together again this year to transform postboxes in Thanet, writes Zoe Walker.

The colourful creations turned up on boxes old and new in Birchington and Minster in the run-up to Christmas.

Karen Everest, one of the talented creators of the Birchington-based toppers, said: ‘We started knitting them in February this year – we like to plan in advance.

‘We are team of 10 that produces them. We made toppers for all the round boxes last year. This year, we have done all 14 boxes in Birchington. And another lady makes the toppers in Minster.

‘They do get wet, but we find they dry in the wind. After Christmas we dry them and pack them away in bags.

‘Knitting them does makes you feel good that you are doing something for the community. Our posties down here are really friendly and they do love them.’
