Be hazard aware

WATCH: Frank McNally’s fall on a customer’s property resulted in a devastating injury

This week, we’re aiming to raise the profile of slip, trip and fall incidents and encourage colleagues to do everything they can to prepare for the coming winter months, when we know conditions outside can become more challenging.

Slips, trips and falls are our second highest cause of accidents in the workplace and account for nearly three-quarters of our most serious injuries. Out of the 667 slip and trip accidents suffered by colleagues so far this year, 61 have involved fractured ankles, wrists, legs and hips, and 133 have resulted in colleagues being unable to attend work.

Two years ago, postman, Frank McNally, was on delivery in Potters Bar when he slipped on some boarding at a customer’s property and suffered a life-changing injury as a result.

Press play to find out what happened after Frank’s accident and how his injury changed his life.

‘I just want to raise awareness to postmen and women to be careful on people’s driveways,’ said Frank. ‘Watch where you’re going and what you might fall onto. Things can happen at any time, on any day – as it proved to me.’

If you feel that a property is unsafe to access, DO NOT proceed. Endorse the mail and inform your manager that a property is unsafe to deliver to. Be prepared and be hazard aware:

  • Be alert to your surroundings.
  • If you see a hazard that you can’t immediately remove, report it.
  • Make sure your footwear has good tread and is suitable for the role, including in severe weather. Wear the Royal Mail uniform issue footwear as it is tested to a high standard and fit for purpose. Poor footwear may increase the chances of injury.
