Black History Month

We want to showcase your nominations of our outstanding black colleagues

October is Black History Month, the annual celebration of the culture, history, achievements and contributions of Britain’s African and Caribbean communities.

Black History Month was first launched in London in 1987 where the aim was for the local community to challenge racism and educate themselves and others about the British history that was not taught in schools.

Black History Month is important now more than ever before, particularly in the light of recent events following the death of George Floyd in the United States, which sparked outrage throughout the world with demonstrations against racial inequality organised in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Ahead of Black History Month, we're looking for nominations of outstanding black colleagues (ideally frontline, but managers too) whose fantastic deeds both in and outside of work have impressed and been an inspiration to others.

Please email groupcommunications@royalmail.com with your nominations. Along with the colleague’s name, position and location, please also include the term ‘Black History Month’ in the subject line.

Supporting BAME colleagues

Making our business a place where black, Asian and minority ethnic colleagues can achieve their potential remains a priority.

Career progression is a key focus as we work towards improving the representation of colleagues from BAME backgrounds across all levels of the business. We need to build greater awareness that the network exists and is there to support our people and shine a light on all the good positive things we are doing across the business.

If you are thinking about holding a BAME cultural event in your unit, and need some help, please reach out to the BAME steering group, or volunteer to help out with their activities. You can contact the group by emailing bame@royalmail.com.
