Learning together

Colleagues in Goldsworth Park Delivery Office, Woking, teamed up with local charity, The Halow Project, to offer work experience to young adults.
The Halow project is a growing community-based charity, based in Guildford, Surrey, whose aim it is to support young people, aged 16+ with a learning disability on their journey into and through adult life.
Postman Andrew Jones, whose son has Asperger’s Syndrome, set up the programme with managers Michael Curlis and Ahmed Aboussad.
‘The young people learn things like how to hold a mailbag and how yorks work,’ said Andrew. ‘Some of them will put it on their CV to help them get a job or volunteer in their local area.’
‘It’s a great programme,’ said Ahmed. ‘If we can help our community, we do it.’
Autism, including Asperger syndrome is more common than many people think. At present, there are around 700,000 people living with autism in the UK, that’s more than 1 in 100.
Being autistic does not mean you have an illness or disease. It means your brain works in a different way from other people. It's something you're born with or first appears when you're very young. If you're autistic, you're autistic your whole life.
