Here’s Peggy…

Yorkshire dog safety campaign a mind-beagle-ing success

Last month, we held our eighth annual Dog Awareness Week, to promote responsible dog ownership with our customers and give guidance to colleagues on how to stay safe.

Since then, Peggy has been doing the rounds. Having started at Sheepscar Mail Processing Unit, Peggy the oversized (six feet to be precise) posting peg has been touring Yorkshire to remind colleagues to use their posting pegs on delivery.

The Yorkshire dog safety campaign came about as we reported that around 47 dog attacks are suffered by colleagues in the UK every week.

‘A dog attack can have huge psychological and physical effects,’ said Shaun Davis, global director of compliance and sustainability. ‘But we must remember that it is the deed not the breed.’

Operations manager, Adam Sutcliffe, said: ‘The peg is made from wood and was made by Sheepscar line manager, Craig Cawood (pictured, left). My engagement committee met, named it Peggy and with the help of service delivery leader, Roger Turvey, we’ll ensure it visits all 96 offices in Yorkshire.

‘Each office is having its name written on the peg as a record, and we’re also displaying some oversized AVOID dog safety posters. Everyone is on board and we pride ourselves on the way we’re spreading such an important message in such a fun and visual way.’

Always remember to AVOID attacks by:

  • A - avoiding any interaction with dogs
  • V - value yourself: don't put yourself at risk
  • O - observe: keep your walk log up to date
  • I - inform others of any potential risks
  • D - defend yourself if necessary, using your delivery equipment.
