The Moreton the merrier

The ‘legendary’ Liverpool postman who met his wife on his round

Jimmy 'Jethro' Moreton, from Walton, has worked as a postman around Walton and Anfield since the late 1970s.

When the Liverpool Echo asked its readers to nominate their ‘best loved posties,’ they were inundated with nominations for colleagues past and present.

Based out of Liverpool North Delivery Office, Jim is a firm favourite of local residents and was nominated as one of Merseyside's favourites.

The 'legendary' Liverpool postman told the paper about his love of Everton football club and the story of how he met his wife while delivering his rounds.

A devoted Blues fan, he used to organise coaches for their away games for decades under the banner 'Jethro's Tours'. Although he no longer organises the tours, it is still a family affair with his daughter now organising away trips.

Jim, whose career as a postman has spanned more than 40 years, told the Echo about the great community spirit where he does his rounds in Walton, Everton, and Anfield. ‘I get on with everyone on my round,’ he said. ‘I always like to talk to people where I can and try and have a bit of a laugh.

‘I've been likened to a welfare rep for the whole community before. When I'm out on my rounds I'll have a chat with people if they want to.’

Jim married his wife Pauline three years ago after first meeting her as her postman. The pair hit it off around eight years ago when they first met, and Jim even jokes that Pauline had ordered items off Amazon just so she could speak to him.

‘I always used to talk to her during my rounds,’ he said. ‘But it wasn't until I got moved onto a different route that I found out she liked me. She was ordering Amazon stuff and kept asking the other postman when Jimmy would be back.

‘She took me to Italy and arranged for us to get married. We didn't tell anyone else. Everyone was stunned.’

Not only is Jim a romantic at heart, when he's not delivering for customers, he also does his bit to raise money for good causes.

Last year, Jim and his brother-in-law completed the 500-mile Camino de Santiago walk from France to northern Spain. It took the pair 30 days to complete with six to eight hours of continuous walking each day raising thousands of pounds for research into prostate cancer.
