‘Absolutely blown away’

Yeovil postman Nick Burton receives a surprise call from Reds great, John Barnes

After working tirelessly to help put a smile on so many faces during these tough times, it was time for Yeovil postman Nick Burton to receive a surprise…

When MG Motor UK asked customers to nominate their key worker heroes, Nick’s wife Shelley got in touch to make her nomination.

As a result, and with the help of MG Motor UK, former England and Liverpool FC legend, John Barnes joined Reds superfan, Nick on a surprise Zoom call to talk through the fancy-dress costumes he’s been wearing to make his customers smile in the village of Hardington and reward him with a VIP trip to Anfield to meet his heroes.

‘Key workers across the country have been working tirelessly to keep the UK going for the last few months,’ said the Reds great. ‘The people at MG Motor asked people to nominate their key worker hero for a special prize.

‘A lot of people assume it’s just doctors and nurses. They don’t understand that there are so many other people that are doing such good work. So, congratulations to Nick for doing all the good work he does. This is well deserved.’

‘It started off with one costume, said Nick, who has worked for Royal Mail for almost 25 years. ‘I was only going to do it for a couple of days. I ended up doing it for five weeks! I bought some costumes, I had some already and I borrowed some off friends. It was worth it just to see the smiles on people’s faces.

‘One day, I went down one road on my round, and everybody clapped me. I’ve had such a mad response back from people saying thank you and that I had helped make them smile every day. They said seeing me every day was something to look forward to in these dark times.

‘Hardington is brilliant. It’s like being part of a big village community as everyone is so friendly. Speaking to John Barnes was amazing. As a Liverpool fan for so many years, he’s definitely one of my all-time heroes.’

‘Nick has been the most amazing postman in Hardington,’ said one of Nick’s customers, Sophie Clotworthy. ‘He is the most joyous person, and we are all so grateful for having him as our postman.’

Another customer, Jacqueline Cole, said: ‘Nick has been so selfless keeping a smile on all our faces throughout the lockdown. He’s a legend in Hardington.’
