Pivotal to the future
On an average day at Royal Mail, we sort a staggering 58 million items. Getting each item to where it needs to be is a complex, logistical challenge – one that we need our fantastic team of engineers to help solve.
We won't achieve our ambitious goal to be the best delivery company across Europe without the latest technology and thinking – two crucial factors our engineers provide with abundance.
Press play to hear from some of our apprentices, who are currently completing the Advanced Engineering Level 3 Apprenticeship programme. This video was filmed at Greenford Mail Centre with the help of head of engineering reliability and knowledge, Manoj Vadher, chief engineer, James Baker and senior HR business partner, Laila Farooq.
‘The one piece of advice I'd give to apprentices is to take every opportunity they possibly can,’ said chief engineer, James Baker. ‘I started as an apprentice 30 years ago and I've taken every opportunity the company has given me.’
Sophie Judge, maintenance team leaderat Carlisle Mail Centre, graduated from the apprenticeship scheme four years ago. ‘What initially attracted me to the apprenticeship scheme was the opportunity to work in an industry where no two days would be the same,’ she said.
‘The people in my cohort were from various diverse backgrounds. Everyone had had previous jobs in different industries. We all came together and really got on well as one big team.’
About the programme
Our Advanced Engineering Apprenticeship programme offers the opportunity to get to grips with the cutting-edge technology needed to deliver a first-class service – covering everything from robotics to intelligent sorting machines.
Apprentices spend their first year in Blackburn, working and learning alongside their peers and getting under the skin of how things work at Royal Mail. They learn how to fix, maintain and review all of our technology and get trained by senior colleagues who have seen it all.
On top of all the on-the-job experience, apprentices work towards an Engineering Technician Apprenticeship Standard that is recognised across the industry.
Royal Mail works closely with the Women Engineering Society (WES) to inspire and support girls and women to achieve their potential as engineers, applied scientists and technical leaders.
