Chatteris congratulates

‘Thank you to our posties, they are our lifeline with the outside world’

A message posted on a Cambridgeshire Facebook group asking people to say thanks to their postman or woman during the coronavirus crisis has received an overwhelming amount of support.

Steven Ayres, a deployment lead who works on independent projects, helps out with rounds for Chatteris Delivery Office during busy times.

Chatteris is a rural town with an elderly population, and Steve wanted to highlight the key role of our colleagues working there. He decided to post on the Chatteris Cambs discussion page asking people to show their support.

‘The post people in Chatteris are a fantastic bunch of people who not only deliver your letters but keep a very close eye on those people in our community that may be vulnerable,’ read the Facebook post.

‘If you see any of them in passing, please give them a smile and a thank you, it will brighten their day no end.’

The message has received hundreds of likes as well as dozens of comments of support. ‘Thank you to our posties, they are our lifeline with the outside world,’ read one comment. Another thanked their local postwoman for dropping off some washing up liquid because they can’t get out themselves.

‘We play a massive part in the lives of vulnerable people,’ said Steve. ‘For some of these people, the only face they see is the one wearing a red shirt and carrying their post.’

Multiple comments on the Facebook post outlined that postmen and women are a ‘lifeline’, and all thanked colleagues for their hard work and commitment.

‘I was so happy with the responses the post received,’ said Steve. ‘It’s not just about delivering mail, it’s about being part of the community. This just goes to prove how valued postmen and women are.’
