Croydon OPG sent to prison for mail theft and fraud offences

Alexander Barnes, a former OPG at Croydon Delivery Office, was identified stealing from the post.

He was subsequently arrested, and his home address searched, during which time, a large amount of stolen banking material was found.

He was charged with offences of theft and fraud and was sentenced to three years and seven months’ imprisonment for stealing banking mail and costs of £14,657.50 were awarded to Royal Mail.

The Judge commented: ‘This was a very serious abuse of a position of trust. Postmen have to be trusted to allow mail to be delivered.’

This was a clear message that those who commit offences of stealing from the mail are likely to be sent to prison.
