‘Magic that works’

Those with keen eyes may have noticed British Science Week (BSW) popping up on their post this week.
That’s because we created a special postmark for BSW (6-15 March) to help honour this nationwide celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths.
The postmark, which is appearing on all stamped mail from 6-15 March, reads: ‘Science is magic that works,’ a classic quote from Cat’s Cradle, a novel by sci-fi and fantasy author, Kurt Vonnegut, which explores issues of science, technology, and religion.
The ‘Our diverse planet’ theme for the BSW 2020 activity packs and poster competition looks at different ways we can celebrate our amazing ecological, cultural and societal diversity.
The packs, which have been distributed to early years, primary and secondary schools around the country, contain plenty of activities focusing on everything from biological diversity and social diversity, to the diversity of knowledge and science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) careers.
The STEM sectors are so much more diverse than certain stereotypes suggest. On an average day at Royal Mail, we sort 58 million items. Getting each item where it needs to be is a complex, logistical challenge – one that we need our engineers to help solve.
Our engineering apprenticeship covers everything from high-tech robotics to intelligent sorting machines, offering everything needed for a fantastic career in engineering. Click here for more.
