‘A fabulous journey’
Service Delivery Leader for the South Joe Massey has ‘enjoyed every moment’ of his 40 years to date with Royal Mail.
When Joe joined the business on 11 February 1980, Hawaiian shirts, loafers (worn without socks), and casual t-shirts under jackets with the sleeves pulled up, were popular fashion items for men.
It was also the year the onset of the recession saw unemployment reach 1.6 million, Pink Floyd’s Another Brick in the Wall hit the airwaves and current Premier League leaders, Liverpool, won the Football League First Division title for the 12th time.
Press play to hear Joe look back on his Royal Mail career.
‘I've worked with so many great people,’ he said. ‘Every day I bounce into work. We work in an environment that's keen and dedicated to our customers. It's been a fabulous journey and I look forward to many more.’
Service delivery director, Shiona Rolfe, said: ‘40 years on and Joe still has a ridiculous amount of energy for the job and remains entirely passionate about doing it well.
‘I’ve often described him as a chameleon as he can pretty much be anything you want him to be. He has a huge willingness to serve the organisation he loves and there’s never a dull moment with him around. Long may it continue.’
Joe’s colleague and friend of 20 years, Andy Downes, HD of special events, assets and peak planning, said: ‘Joe is one of the most enthusiastic leaders this company has ever had - his people love him.
‘Joe always does the right thing and he’s done that throughout his career.’
Senior HR business partner – South Coast, Nicola Shoeten-Sack, said: ‘From the short time I’ve known Joe, I’ve been inspired by his charismatic leadership style.
‘While this bodes well for engaging his people, when it comes to planning his role in presentations, I always have to double his allotted time as he loves to talk about his 40 years in the business!’
