Learning on the job

National Apprenticeship Week – Konrad Piela

As part of this week’s 13th annual National Apprenticeship Week we are sharing stories about some of our apprentices to celebrate the contribution they make to Royal Mail and our future.

Today, we hear from Logistics management apprentice, Konrad Piela.

Konrad’s current role as a linehaul optimisation manager means he is accountable for ensuring the regional networks are fully optimised to meet business standards.

When we asked Konrad when and why he decided to do an apprenticeship programme, he said: ‘After completing university, the apprentice programme stood out as a means to continue my development while being able to work full-time.

‘The programme offers continuous development, interlinking work with your degree. It has really helped my personal development, particularly my leadership skills. With an aging workforce, some people are reluctant to change. But building a good rapport with my colleagues has helped me overcome any barriers.

‘There’s a lot of commitment needed to undertake the programme; you’re expected to manage your time to meet your university and work deadlines. But fortunately, the course is very flexible, allowing you to tailor your assignments to your daily job.

‘Some work projects were tailored to develop key areas in support of my degree. Working in different functions and learning different methodologies through my university course, I’ve been able to utilise continuous improvement cycles to implement efficiency savings within the supply chain.

‘I’m very thankful that my manager and mentor has always been happy to help drive my development and offer any support or guidance when required. My peers are also always available to support me.’

After completing his apprenticeship, Konrad plans to take on a role within the linehaul function and perhaps continue studying for a Masters in supply chain leadership.

‘In terms of advice for anyone thinking of applying for an apprenticeship development programme, I would say to make sure you have discussed the programme with your manager to ensure you have the allocated time given each week to contribute to your studies.

‘It can be hard work to write assignments in the middle of Peak, for example, and you’ll need to be committed to the course to ensure you’re able to succeed.’
