Happy Valentine’s Day

Is there anything more romantic than a handwritten love letter?

This Valentine’s Day we’ve been digging through our archives to reveal stamps focused on the theme of love.

Featuring such iconic subjects as Shakespeare, cupid, roses and more, the (pictured) stamps illustrate just how much love has influenced stamp design over the last 80 years.

Some would say nothing is more romantic than a handwritten love letter. The Postal Museum in London has some of the oldest cards and letters of all time, including a huge number of Valentine's Day cards.

Press play to join RMtv presenter Bryony Billsom and Postal Museum curator Joanna Espin as they take a look at some of the Valentine’s Day cards in the museum’s collection.

Bryony also met Stephen Agar, managing director, Royal Mail Letters, who spoke about Valentine’s Day cards today and the resilience of greeting cards in general.

‘I don’t think you can e-substitute a hug or a kiss,’ said Stephen. ‘And I don’t think you can e-substitute a Valentine’s Day card…we are still a card-sending nation, and long may that continue.’

If you haven’t already seen it, click here to see how we looked at Valentine’s Day a little differently this year, with help from the dance students at Wakefield College.
