Road rescue

Distribution driver Stephen Bready has been applauded for his quick thinking, after finding himself first on the scene of a serious road accident.
Stephen, from SDL West Scotland Distribution, came across a car on its side during an early morning shift and quickly blocked the road with his van and called the emergency services.
He and Jimmy Russell, an agency driver also on the scene, reassured the driver who was trapped in the overturned car. Both drivers kept the woman talking, helping to ensure that she remained conscious.
‘The lady was screaming, so we tried to calm her down and make sure she stayed still until the emergency services came,’ Stephen explained.
‘It was a joint effort. It was really important that we were able to move across two lanes and stop traffic from coming right past the scene.’
Thanks to the drivers’ quick actions, the woman was able to be taken to hospital for treatment.
Stephen has worked for Royal Mail for 16 years, but says that this was the first time he’s been involved in anything like this.
‘I’ve obviously seen accidents, driven past them when I’m working, but I’ve never been first on a scene before,’ he said.
‘We just did what anyone else would have done in the same situation. You don’t really think, you just act in the moment to make sure that you do what is needed at the time.’
