The pensioner apprentice
Last year, John Deere started drawing some of his occupational pension from Royal Mail, but he also started an apprenticeship.
The delivery deployment manager from Battersea in South London is currently studying for an Association of Project Management qualification, which is available as an apprenticeship, following changes made by the Government in 2017.
‘My employment with Royal Mail now spans six decades so the last thing on my mind, or so I thought, was going back to study,’ said John. ‘But now that the statutory age limitations on apprenticeship schemes have been removed, they’re potentially open to every employee.
‘I’m developing both my professional knowledge and approach in my day job as a delivery deployment lead. The study and commitment are demanding and challenging, but worthwhile and hopefully, rewarding if I’m successful at exam time.
‘It sounds a bit surreal that a pensioner can produce their student card for discounts on some goods and services but that, in practical terms, is fact. As each day passes we should be able to develop, learn and enjoy in the knowledge that the opportunity to grow is available to all, irrespective of whom or what you are.
‘I am very thankful to Royal Mail and the learning provider for their support.’
