Life of Riley

Customer ‘extremely grateful’ to James for saving her mum

On 30 December, 81-year-old Margaret Riley fell down the stairs while on her way to open the door to collect a parcel.

But for the quick thinking and patience of Bootle-based postman James Vasconcelos (pictured), the outcome could have been a lot worse.

Margaret’s daughter, Cathie Inman, said: ‘James heard mum cry out and waited until she was able to get herself up and answer the door. He then rang emergency services and then me.

‘He stayed with my Mum until I arrived. He remained calm in the situation, which is exactly what was needed and was very good with my mum.’

James said: ‘I know the lady and waited a while after I chapped the door, because I know she’s a bit unsteady on her feet.

‘I heard loud noises coming down the steps, and then a big bang. I opened the letter box and called to see if she was okay. There was no answer so I knocked on the door and rang the bell.

‘After a few minutes, I heard her say “Excuse me, excuse me…”, so I asked her to open the door.

‘Margaret had fallen down the full flight of stairs – she had grazes and bruises on her arms, and a nasty cut on her eye.

‘I sat her down and called the ambulance. I asked her about other members of the family, but she didn’t want to disturb her daughter at work. Eventually she gave me her number and I rang while waiting for the ambulance.

‘I stayed and talked with her to keep her awake and alert. I rang the office and spoke to them – my manager said I should stay put and wait for help. After an hour and a half, the ambulance arrived, and I was able to go and finish my round.’

Cathie said: ‘Both me and my mum are extremely grateful for this and we would really appreciate it if you can pass on our thanks.

‘James really made a difference that day and I hope this can be noted on his record. Please tell him that mum was lucky to not suffer any broken bones or serious injuries.’
