Gobsmoking heroics

Tonbridge postman Simon Isaacs has been hailed for his bravery after rescuing three people from a house fire.
Simon first noticed screams coming from inside the house on St Paul’s Close, before seeing two people gasping for air from an upstairs window. Simon told Kent Live of the unforgettable moment he put down his postbag to approach the ‘blaze’ on the ground floor.
‘I ran out the back where there was another person who was suffering from smoke inhalation,’ said Simon.
‘The girl had passed out and was hanging out of the window and when I got to her, I shook her and she woke up again.
‘They had dogs inside and they passed them to me, I had to drop them down. It was pretty horrific really. I got smoke inhalation afterwards so I took the next day off.’
Simon spoke of his ‘huge relief’ when he heard the fire brigade approaching in the distance. When three fire engines arrived on scene, Simon donated his jacket to help keep one of the residents warm, before continuing with his round.
‘I didn’t know what else to do so I just went and did the rest of my duty when the fire engines arrived,’ he said. ‘It wasn’t a perfect rescue but everyone got stuck in and helped pull it off.’
Pat and Fred Lanzarotti, who live next door to the address, told Kent Live: ‘That postman was a hero, he saved her life. He deserves a medal.’
