Opportunity knocks

Our 2020 Operations graduate, Logistics graduate and advanced engineering apprenticeship programmes are open for applications until Friday 3 January.
These are fantastic opportunities for colleagues, family or friends as David Griffiths, who is in the third year of an advanced engineering apprenticeship, can testify.
‘I was looking for an engineering apprenticeship,’ said David, who is based at Cardiff Mail Centre. ‘I saw the advanced engineering apprenticeship advertised online and applied immediately to train as a maintenance engineer. I was attracted by the fact it covered both electrical and mechanical engineering.’
In the first year of his apprenticeship, David went to an advanced training centre in Blackburn where he learned the basics, before returning to Cardiff to continue his apprenticeship under the helpful guidance of senior engineers.
‘We fix and maintain equipment such as parcel sorting machines (PSMs) and integrated mail processors (IMPs), which process letters,’ he said. ‘The engineers here at Cardiff have supported me in learning about how the kit works and how to find faults and use online systems.
‘It’s been very useful, and I’ve gained a wide skill set. At the end of the three years, I’ll get a Level 3 NVQ – I’d recommend the apprenticeship 100%.’
The future looks bright for David, who has been offered a full-time position at Bristol Mail Centre, which he hopes to take up as soon as he completes his third year.
