Behind the scenes

Falmouth colleagues make the headlines with impressive operation

It's difficult for members of the public to comprehend just how physically and mentally taxing our busiest time of the year can be for colleagues.

At Falmouth Delivery Office, the mammoth task of dealing with hundreds of thousands of parcels and letters every Christmas is bestowed upon just a handful of colleagues.

On the morning of Tuesday 17 December, just over a week before the big day, Cornwall Live took a look behind the scenes to see just how hard our people work in the weeks before Christmas.

The office covers Falmouth, Penryn and the many villages and homes in the TR11 and TR10 postcode areas, and shifts as many as 250,000 items each week in the run-up to Christmas.

‘Last week we delivered a quarter of a million items in the TR10 and 11 postcode areas,’ said delivery line manager, Simon Mills, who celebrates his 40th year with the business next year. ‘We’ve had a very good December, very busy.

‘At this time of year with online shopping taking its toll on the high street, we’re getting a lot more parcels to deliver but we’re still able to cope with the dedication of our colleagues.’

In the lead up to Christmas, colleagues are out and about much longer than usual delivering the festive mailbag. The day begins early, unloading and sorting the first lorry load of Christmas mail at 4am.

‘They’re all doing very well,’ said Simon. ‘We’re coping very well.’
