Stay safe online

Black Friday and Cyber Monday bring increased risk of cybercrime – five tips to protect yourself

Did you know that more online thefts happen on Black Friday than on any other day?

Don’t let the online fraudsters ruin your bargain hunting this Black Friday and don’t allow slips like losing a work device on a Christmas night out to ruin the fun.

Scams can come in different shapes and sizes (phishing emails, fake-ads, sites or promo-deals). Whether you’re taking part in Black Friday shopping week or gearing up for the festive season, ensure you shop securely and protect yourself and your information at all times.

Let Think Secure help you to stay safe over this busy period. Here are five top tips to remember:

  1. If you’re signing up to sites or creating new accounts to purchase the perfect gift, be sure to use strong and robust passwords and don’t use a password you already use.
  2. Be wary of links and attachments in emails you didn’t expect to receive. Hover your cursor over the link to view the URL and check the address of the sender as it could be a phish.
  3. Look for the padlock symbol in the address bar (HTTPS), it’s a good indication that the website can be trusted.
  4. Stick with sites you trust and be mindful about providing information about yourself (e.g. your bank details).
  5. Remember, if an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is (so don’t click).
