Proud plate spinner

As part of our International Men’s Day celebrations, parent and carer, Jason Crompton shares his story

Tuesday 19 November was International Men’s Day and as part of a week celebrating the positive value men bring to the world, their families and communities, a number of colleagues have very kindly agreed to share their stories.

Today, we hear from finance comms and engagement manager, Jason Crompton.

‘In my current role in our finance function, I believe I play a vital part in creating and developing a truly inclusive workplace. As a powerful advocate for inclusion, I’m always looking to encourage colleagues to share their experiences whilst also ensuring that I do the same in my own life.

‘As a parent and a carer myself, it’s all too easy to say, “I’m fine” when spinning numerous plates, but I’ve learned the hard way in the past how difficult it can be when those plates start to fall. Now, I always stop and take the time to check in with myself to make sure I’m on top of my health and wellbeing, both emotionally and physically.

‘Being a parent can be so rewarding and I’m very fortunate that my 13-year-old son is such a grounded and talented individual. His mum and I divorced when he was four, but we agreed that although we lived apart, we would always strive to maintain being that close-knit family to ensure he grew up in a loving and safe environment. That’s something we’re very proud of.

‘As a carer, things are tough at the moment as my mum has vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s which is steadily progressing. After a recent spell in hospital and a rehabilitation home, we’re making sure everything is in place, so that she can safely return home. As her main carer, it can be hard to shoulder the responsibility, but I’m fortunate enough to have support from my partner and family.

‘We’ve got to remember that everyone is unique, has a unique view of the world, and a unique set of skills and experiences. It’s important that we always ensure we do our best to value our differences, no matter what our ethnicity, gender, age, disability, sexuality or religious beliefs are.’

Parents and carers

Thursday 21 November was Carers Rights Day. Whether you’re a new carer or have been caring for someone for a while, we believe it’s important you understand your rights and are able to access the support that is available to you as soon as you need it.

Many of our people balance parental and caring responsibilities with their career. Our Parents & Carers steering group advocates for carers and offers support to those who need it.

Their aim is to help colleagues with caring responsibilities balance these duties with their day-to-day working life. We can help direct you to where you can obtain support with formal flexible working requests and approvals as well as advice on the types of flexible working available.
