Investing in our future

Sally Ashford and Nick Landon host Town Hall sessions in Ascot, Gerrards Cross and Coventry South

HR director, Sally Ashford hosted Town Hall events at Ascot and Gerrards Cross delivery offices this week, while chief customer officer, Nick Landon held two Town Hall sessions at Coventry South Delivery Office.

Sally spoke to colleagues in Ascot and Gerrards Cross about our aims to invest in the future to ensure Royal Mail is fit for a more parcels-focused world, and how we can only do this if we are successful at winning and retaining new customers.

‘The ballot to strike is a real shame,’ said Sally. ‘Our aim is to invest in our future, but we need to be successful for the future.

‘Amazon have come out and said that they’re recruiting an army of drivers in the lead up to Christmas. We need to protect Royal Mail. We need to change and work in a parcels-oriented world.’

Colleagues shared their views on where they felt the business should be looking to improve in order to stay ahead of the competition, and those who had spent a considerable amount of time in the business spoke insightfully about the ways in which their roles have changed since they first joined Royal Mail.

Nick hosted two sessions in Coventry South covering a number of topics including our five-year strategy, market trends, and how the business compares against the likes of Hermes, Yodel, and DPD in terms of price and quality.

He also emphasised how any potential strike action could curb our plans to invest substantially in transforming the business, as well as destroy much of the work colleagues have done to secure new business and win back previously lost business.

Colleagues asked Nick a number of well-informed, intelligent and sensible questions addressing the mediation report, Parcelforce, the Universal Service Obligation, separate parcel deliveries, why we have introduced age and ID verification as a product and function on the PDAs, and next steps in our dispute with the CWU.

Senior leaders from across the business are taking the time to visit offices in all areas of the country to provide key strategic updates and speak to colleagues about the issues that matter most to them.

Look out for more updates from future sessions and if you’d like to host a Town Hall in your own office, please email groupcommunications@royalmail.com.
