Handle with care

Controlling substances hazardous to health - European week for safety and health at work 2019

The theme for this year’s European week for safety and health at work, is ‘Managing dangerous substances in the workplace.’

We are somewhat limited to the dangerous items we handle in the business. However, some business areas such as property, engineering and logistics face more challenges than others.

The key to handling dangerous substances well is proper risk assessment. Our Fleet workshop colleagues for example, are used to working with a wide range of substances, such as engine oil and vehicle maintenance sprays, which can cause harm if not used with care.

We have introduced a number of safer products and processes within our workshops, such as non-caustic vehicle shampoo. We have also largely replaced cleaning chemicals with non-harmful variants and as well as new controls around welding fume.

We have deployed a comprehensive product assessment process that provides sites with practical tailored advice. These obligations are set out in the COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) regulations 2002.

Colleagues can access Stay Calm Online advice and guidance on dealing with dangerous substances should an issue develop with customers’ items travelling through the post. The website includes advice on how to prepare for and deal with an emergency should one occur.

Central Postal Control (CPC) deals with issues on a regular basis and will be able to talk you through how to deal with any situation. They can be contacted 24/7 on 0345 266 1060.
