50 bhupendous years

Bhupendra looks back at all the changes he’s seen over his incredible 50 years of service

The team at Mount Pleasant Mail Centre, celebrated popular postman Bhupendra Shah’s 50 years of service with a special lunch.

Bhupendra started his ‘long and enjoyable career’ with Royal Mail at Acton Delivery Office on 15 September 1969.

‘I started as a postman on deliveries at Acton doing six days a week,’ said Bhupendra. ‘In January 1970, I was transferred to Mount Pleasant Post Office, as it was previously called before becoming London Central.

‘Over the last 50 years, as I’m sure you can imagine, I’ve performed several duties, sorting mail and packets, (as we called parcels in the old days), as well as working on all our machines (ASMs, LSMs, MTTs, coding desks and culler facer cancellers).

‘When the Foreign section was at Mount Pleasant, I worked on the Customs & Excise section. So, as you can see, I’ve seen a lot of changes in London Central with all the new machines coming in, and all the effects of the decline in letters. I’ve worked with so many people during my years here and I’ve been lucky to have built some great friendships, many of which have extended outside of work.

‘I’ve really enjoyed my 50 years working at Royal Mail as the job has helped keep me fit and my mind occupied.’

Plant manager, Robert Brady, said: ‘Bhupendra has achieved a fantastic 50-year milestone. He’s obviously seen quite a few changes in that time and listening to his experiences really shows just how much both the plant and the business has transformed over the years – he’s certainly contributed to a changing organisation!

‘To celebrate Bhupendra’s service, we held a special lunch with his colleagues and managers and he was presented with his long-service award and gifts. As a team, we were pleased to reward him for his great contribution over the years!’
