‘It’s good to talk’

From OPG to running the largest late shift in the country…

Late shift manager, Sarah O’Shaughnessy, from South Midlands Mail Centre (SMMC), has been with Royal Mail for 25 years and says she feels lucky to have such an amazing and engaged team behind her.

‘I love the daily interaction I have with the people I work with and I really enjoy the buzz of the late shift,’ she said. ‘Having joined the business as a part-time PHG, I’ve now been a manager for 10 years, during which time I’ve covered various roles. My greatest achievement to date though, is running the biggest late shift in the country at our largest mail centre.

‘Royal Mail has given me various opportunities throughout my 25 years here and supported me in bringing up my children. Once my kids had moved on, I was given the opportunity to dip my toe into management.

‘My team at SMMC, from my immediate direct reports, to my frontline colleagues and the CWU on the shift are incredibly supportive and never fail to demonstrate their will to get the job done. We work together to solve problems and do what we can to allow everyone to contribute and share their ideas on how we can improve and support better engagement across the shift.

‘Over the last two years we have collectively delivered year-on-year improvements and our Employee Survey results reflect the fantastic team spirit we have here at SMMC. It’s good to talk and this is something we’ve made sure to deliver on, after all, communication is our business.’
