In loving memory

Nick and Lizz are aiming to donate at least one Cooler Cuddlecot to Royal Preston Hospital

On 24 July, Preston Central delivery line manager, Nick Davidson and his wife Preston postwoman, Lizz suffered the tragic loss of their baby boy Alex.

Nick and Lizz are now raising money to fund essential equipment for Royal Preston Hospital’s maternity unit, where Alex was born prematurely.

‘Alex was placed in a cot with a cool mat underneath the mattress, alongside a noisy fan, so that we could spend time saying our goodbyes,’ said Lizz. ‘Speaking to the midwives, we were told in conversation that there are much more modern Cooler Cuddlecots which are more practical and beneficial to the babies, parents and staff, but there is no funding available for them.

‘In memory of Alex, we would like to raise enough money to buy and donate at least one Cooler Cuddlecot for the Royal Preston Sharoe Green Delivery Suite. We would like to raise enough money for four to help meet the unfortunate demand, but we are beginning with one as our target.’

Nick and Lizz are using their Just Giving page for friends, family and colleagues to sponsor a number of planned fundraising activities.

Leanne Lyons, area leadership team support manager, said: ‘Lizz and Nick are hosting various charity events in order to raise enough funds for Royal Preston's maternity unit to help them purchase at least one Cooler Cuddlecot. These special cots allow for parents in Lizz and Nick's situation to spend more precious time saying their goodbyes.

‘Currently, Royal Preston do not have the funds to purchase such equipment as they cost £1,500 each. Lizz is hosting a Spinathon on Sunday 3 November which anyone can join if they’re interested. Nick is doing a Saturday day off raffle and a football card at Central Delivery Office, while delivery office managers Ricky Carberry and Steve Butler are both doing Saturday day off raffles in Rossendale and Blackpool. We are also going to do something at Leyland that has yet to be decided.’
