‘Ry the Guy’

Cheltenham postman Ryan Williams aka ‘Ry the Guy’ is living a childhood dream after becoming a wrestler — but is still waiting to deliver his first win.
When Ryan turned 30 he decided it was finally time fulfil his destiny and become a professional wrestler. Shortly after he was thrown into his first match with South West Wrestling, his postie gimmick has become a hit with audiences.
You can watch Ryan in action below:
Ryan does his rounds in a customised uniform with cut-off sleeves showing off his ‘massive guns,’ which he uses in the ring to great effect with his two special moves — the ‘Special Delivery’ and the ‘Return to Sender’.
He told Metro.news: ‘It’s something I’ve always wanted to do — I’ve been a wrestling fan my whole life. A training school opened just down the road and everyone encouraged me to go so I went along. Then I just kept going back week after week.’
Ryan said he initially wanted to stamp out the postman gimmick, but when he discovered the appeal becoming a hero had, he embraced it.
‘I think it brings a different audience,’ he said. ‘People recognise me as just a regular guy. It’s always been the same experience so far — I got my ass kicked on the weekend! But I’ve spoken to the promoter and he wants to start getting me some wins under my belt.’
Despite the extensive practice, Ryan said that the fighting — often criticised for being ‘fake’ — still hurts.
‘You shouldn’t look at the wrestling in the same way as UFC or boxing,’ he said. ‘We want to give people value for money. We’re trained to do it but it still causes pain — especially if you don’t land properly.’
